WELCOME TO THE ACHTERHOEK

There is plenty to do in the beautiful Achterhoek region. There are no musts, but lots of possibilities, all within the vicinity of Hotel & Brasserie De Heerlyckheid. You’ll never have to feel bored, but of course you’re also free to simply do nothing and enjoy a slower pace of life.

Here are some tips for if you do want to go out and explore:

Bredevoort

Bredevoort is a charming and lively town with a rich history, lots of art and cultural initiatives, artisans, book stores and antique shops. The medieval cobbled streets, the beautiful Vestingpark along the old defensive moat, and the green surroundings of the Vestingplaats are ever calling out for you to explore, whether on foot or by bike, and enjoy just being in this tranquil environment.

THE KORENBURGERVEEN RECREATIONAL AREA

Within just a few kilometres of De Heerlyckheid is the Korenburgerveen, an area of marshland spanning from Vragender to Winterswijk. This beautiful nature reserve features raised bog, marshy forest, heathland and meadows. The Dutch nature preservation association is actively combatting desiccation in the area so as to conserve the many rare species of flora and fauna that call the area home.
The Korenburgerveen is a wonderful area to hike in at any time of year. The centrally located observation tower provides breath-taking views of this very special landscape.

Aalten, Winterswijk,

Winterswijk and the surrounding area have been named a National Landscape. The best way to view this scenic eastern part of the Achterhoek region is on a bicycle. East of Aalten, you will find the Loohuisbos and Walfort nature reserves, which are part of the Winterswijk National Landscape. The area boasts beautiful hedgerows and old forest featuring Scots pines, many of them aged a hundred years and up.

Keistad Lichtenvoorde

The village of Lichtenvoorde and its surroundings are brimming with exciting events to attend. Some of the more well-known, nationally renowned ones include the Black Cross motorsports festival in July, the flower parade and the annual 3-day fair during the 2nd weekend of September.

There is not a single week in the year, in fact, that doesn’t include a fun event in Lichtenvoorde.

Concerts, festivals, fashion shows, Sunday shopping, the Christmas fair, cycling and hiking tours or tournaments… There’s never a dull moment!
